118 Capital We aren't explicitly focused on a particular area of impact -- we look for good opportunities wherever they may be. That said and based on the back-ground of our team members we're most interested in startups making measurable impact within Clean Energy & Clean Tech, EdTech and Economic Development.

Ken Nguyen I really like Edtech. On that note, is there such a thing as a non-impact edTech or clean tech in your view? In fact, how do you define an "impact venture"?

Alex Goodman You can definitely have EdTech and CleanTech ventures that don't necessarily have social impact intrinsic to the business model. To us, the extent to which social impact is intrinsic to the model is one of the critical aspects to how 'social' an enterprise is.

Ken Nguyen Can you give an example of an EdTech or CleanTech without an intrinsic impact element? Love this discussion, cuz it shows how "social impact" can mean such different things to different investors. <3

Cory Shea for ed tech, how about coursera, udemy, and the other online class platforms?

Ken Nguyen Totally get your examples Cory. My more relaxed view of impact would actually apply to Coursera, simply because it makes "knowledge" more accessible, cheaper overall.

Alex Goodman How about a large corporation like Blackboard, Ken? They're one of the biggest EdTech companies - would they be a social impact company?

Harold Looney Thanks 118 Capital for your sponsorship of this community. I reviewed your website and I am interested in learning more about the criteria to become a fellow. Based on the profiles of your current and previous fellows, it appears one needs to be a undergrad or graduate student at a US University. Is that correct?
