Helping communities grow: PittMoss works with local organizations dedicated to creating positive change
An important aspect of PittMoss’s business is supporting the local community and economy. From the beginning, our team has made a goal of purchasing through local, independent vendors and stores, from where we print our signage, to where we stop and buy a cup of coffee. Now that our business is growing, we have been actively working on more ways to give back in 2020. Below we highlight some of our work with wonderful organizations dedicated to lifting up local communities.
Sankofa Village Community Gardens: https://www.svcgpgh.com/
The Sankofa Community Garden is a special place dedicated to eradicating food deserts, providing urban agriculture programs, and is a hub for residents to gather, connect and share. PittMoss delivered their Plentiful product, which filled two empty raised beds and provided a learning experience for the students to see how to grow in a different type of soil. This project will be a feature topic in an upcoming visit by the Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture, Russell Redding, on July 21st. PittMoss was invited to attend and we are eager to grow our relationship with this wonderful community garden as they are moving into a larger space right down the road.
Grounded Strategies, in coordination with the City of Pittsburgh https://groundedpgh.org/
At the beginning of the coronavirus here in Pittsburgh, advocates and community leaders recognized the need for access to fresh local food. Grounded Strategies, whose mission is to use land as a medium for community change, provided hundreds of grow bags, complete with PittMoss and plants, to deliver to various organizations throughout the city. Both Grounded Strategies and the City helped identify locations like local shelters and housing developments. This wonderful effort has led to growing relationships between all involved, with Grounded placing an order just last week for a separate project!
Grow Pittsburgh https://www.growpittsburgh.org/
Grow Pittsburgh is an incredible organization in Pittsburgh that spearheads many urban agriculture projects in the city, including managing community gardens, learning workshops and being an overall resource for many like-minded citizens and organizations. Following a tour of our factory late last year, PittMoss donated material for their growers to learn more. This season, PittMoss has delivered bulk material to a variety of community gardens to support Grow Pittsburgh’s efforts throughout the City. Many wonderful developments have come from this partnership and we are eager to see what the 2021 season has in store!
On a final note, these are just a few highlights of the community work we have done this season, just in Pittsburgh. The growing demand for our product to support the local agriculture scene in Pittsburgh has allowed us to develop special “community development” pricing, that makes PittMoss products extremely affordable for organizations dedicated to serving the community. Although these stories are hyper-local to Pittsburgh, this model is our blueprint for how to connect in many other local communities throughout the United States especially as we add more facilities in the future.
And remember, PittMoss is a triple bottom line business that can have tangible impact in communities across the country. Do not miss out on your chance to invest and gain equity today.
