Eve Peters Hi James, thanks for writing in! For those reading who may not be familiar, MIXTT was a web-based dating app that I founded in 2007 at the age of 24. The concept was group dating, similar to Grouper (another dating web app that emerged years later). We launched MIXTT at TechCrunch50 in San Francisco in 2008 and ran it for about a year. Ultimately, I had to shut down the business, as we had struggled to gain traction and funding. Looking back, the most important lessons learned from that experience are:
1) Team is everything. At that time, neither my cofounder nor I had any relevant experience - not in business, design, marketing, or tech. Our vision and ambition took us quite far, but those alone are not enough.
2) Product decisions must be driven by data. With Whim, we are constantly collecting qualitative feedback and analyzing quantitative data (via Mixpanel) to understand user behavior and make informed product decisions around it. We didn't do this at all with MIXTT.
