Short- and Long-Term Drought Solution
PittMoss helps reduce watering immediately, while being part of the solution to reduce climate change long term.
“Hey southwest customers… we want you to know we are thinking about you during this time of crisis,” said Brian Scott, CEO at PittMoss.
A record-breaking heat wave with dangerous 100-degree temperature conditions by as early as 8 AM has been big news over the last few weeks! The southwest states most effected by this unprecedented condition include California, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Montana. It hasn’t been this bad since July 1960 and July 2020 according to the National Weather Service in Tucson, AZ. Even nighttime temperatures are at a dangerous high of 92 degrees. (See below)
With high heat temperatures comes historic months-long drought conditions in those areas too! According to the US Drought Monitor, the entirety of California, Oregon, Utah and Nevada are in a severe drought as are 88% of areas across Westerns states.
California alone has to conserve up to 40% of their water consumption. “PittMoss has many customers in California as well as those other states, so we understand water is a challenge right now. Everyone is looking for ways to conserve water,” said Scott. “Our PittMoss product requires 2/3 less water... cutting water use by 66%”.
"PittMoss was used in conjunction with compost and a preliminary study showed that water use per avocado tree was cut from 144 gallons to 62.8 gallons per week, this study is on-going and further information will be available as time goes on,” says Leighton Morrison, Founder and CEO at Kingdom Aquaponics, LLC.
An inside look at the Hoover Dam. Water Levels are at an all-time low.
Scientists say its unrelenting nature is being exacerbated by manmade climate change. “Climate change is clearly playing a role here”, said Scott. “We see it all the time, not only with severe weather conditions, but also with the carbon emissions that impact our planet.”
Using peat-free PittMoss instead of other peat-based products has a significant impact on the environment helping to reverse climate change.
From 2014 to March 2021, PittMoss’ reported a savings of 4,348.11 metric tons of CO2 emissions, which equates to other referenceable items such as:
- 10,927,661 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle
- 4,805,894 pounds of coal burned
- 489,266 gallons of gasoline consumed
- 177,749 propane cylinders used
- 1,479 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled
PittMoss products prove once again it’s the right choice to ease short-term effects of severe weather conditions while positively impacting the carbon footprint on the environment long-term.
