Billions of dollars are ahead for Up Sonder’s industry by 2020 according to Goldman Sachs and PwC as businesses will spend billions each year on aerial data for inspecting, monitoring, protecting, reviewing assets and other needs.
To lower costs, businesses are turning to new drone technology to do this better, safer and more quickly. But flying commercial drones is complicated - airspace authorization, certifications, regulations, insurance, flight planning, maintenance, safety protocols, data processing, and more are leaving companies confused and lost.
Businesses need a partner that makes accessing drone services simple, and transparent, while at the same time providing the flexibility to adapt to future changes in the drone industry like autonomous flight.
Up Sonder is connecting the world to drones with our adaptable marketplace for businesses to book drone services. Today with marketplace 1.0 and in the future with marketplace 2.0.
Up Sonder is laser-focused on meeting the skyrocketing demand for drone services. Our marketplace gives businesses easy access to qualified, licensed and insured drone pilots. Up Sonder’s experienced pilots are taking to the air to film real estate, inspect cell phone towers and recon oil & gas facilities.
Drone services are as varied as the industries that use them, but can be as simplified as aerial data collection. The most common form of data collected is videos and photographs, but there has been an increasing need for sensors like thermal cameras and Lidar.
Companies are turning to drones for the simple fact that they make aerial data collection cheaper and quicker.
Up Sonder appeared on Meet the Drapers and received positive feedback during the episode, including:
Organic growth | 50+ missions
Have a look at some past missions
Is built for businesses to search and book drone services in their direct area from one simple website, upsonder.com, with upfront transparent pricing. For multiple missions and large needs, Up Sonder has the added benefit for larger enterprise clients to integrate Up Sonder’s API software to bulk order drone missions nationwide.
Commercial drone pilots are the backbone of Up Sonder and we treat them right. Pilots flying for Up Sonder choose their own rate, work hours, accept or reject bookings and have complete control over their listing page that details their work history, expertise, drone features, and past work examples. The best part is Up Sonder drone pilots get to keep 95% of their rate with direct payouts to their bank or via Paypal.
Up Sonder makes 15% from each drone booking by charging a 10% service fee to the client and a 5% service fee to the pilot plus a flat $7 booking fee. For example, if a pilot sets her or his rate at $200 per hour and a client books this pilot for 3 hour, the client will be charged $667. After the mission is complete the pilot receives $570 and Up Sonder $97.
Today businesses want to use drones but tomorrow society will rely on drones but there are not enough human pilots to fulfill this demand. Up Sonder will automate its marketplace with an autonomous drone network to help its human pilots.
An autonomous drone network that is self-sustaining is the only way to keep pace with the everyday tasks of the future such as mail delivery, grocery pick up, medical emergencies, home security, roof inspections, construction monitoring, and even coffee delivered directly to your vehicle during commutes.
The future of drones will grow past today’s commercial use cases and into everyday living - children to business executives to the elderly will be impacted (for the better) by this amazing technology. Up Sonder is building this future with one simple network to handle it all.
Up Sonder is where the world orders drone services both large and small and where third party drone service providers can harness the power of Up Sonder’s “if” (infinity flight) charging network to let their autonomous drones do more and fly further reaching more customers.
Drones are powerful tools that will change the way we work and live. When you combine their consumer, commercial and governmental use, analysts agree, drones are an opportunity too large to ignore.
Goldman Sachs says that drones are a $100 billion market opportunity by 2020 and estimate that over $13 billion will be spent on commercial and civil use of drones.
Major industries are already using drones and those that offer the most growth opportunity in the near future include construction, oil & gas, agriculture, inspection/insurance, 3D mapping, real estate, journalism and mining among others.
The application of drones for commercial and civil industries is going to revolutionize the way everyone from farmers to firefighters gather data and make informed decisions. In a groundbreaking 2016 report, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) valued the emerging global market for business services using drones at over $127 billion. There’s a gold field of opportunities for UpSonder.
A recent report by Skyward, a Verizon company, found that 92% of companies that implement a drone program have a return on investment within a year. No wonder many are predicting that the market for drone services is about to explode. In fact, Skyward is expecting the commercial adoption of drones to double in the coming years!
Autonomous drone operation
Drones will increasingly operate themselves. New technology will allow drones to sense and avoid each other and communicate in real time with both the companies that deploy them as well as air traffic control.
Search for energy solutions
Currently battery life is limiting the distance a drone can fly. Everyone from Amazon to Up Sonder is looking for solutions to give drones more power! Ideas include charging networks, more efficient batteries and renewable power sources.
5G networks will connect to drones, helping to integrate them into air traffic control systems and allowing them to beam data more efficiently.
Regulation will open up
As new technology makes drones safer, authorities around the world will soften their regulations on drones allowing widespread operations that are currently restricted such as flying at night and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS).
Smaller sensors + better drones = new opportunities
As sensors (like thermal and Lidar) become cheaper, smaller and lighter drones will be able to carry a more robust set of tools which will further increase their use by commercial and civil entities.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Like many other industries, AI will transform the way drones are used and understood. AI will let drones collect data more efficiently and will allow drones to safely interact with the world around them.
Up Sonder is evolving for a drone future.
Up Sonder is making sure we evolve with these changes that have already started to affect the drone services industry.
Our team is hard at work to ensure each autonomous drone in the future lands and flies with centimeter precision for every mission. We are developing a proprietary low cost RTK GPS that will allow our network of charge points and fleet of drones to be highly scalable and efficient.
Up Sonder founders are in it to win it and want to dominate the drone industry. Up Sonder’s CEO mortgaged his home for $100,000 for startup capital to get Up Sonder ready for the drone revolution. Up Sonder’s President invested his life savings and together with the Up Sonder team is preparing for the next stage of growth. In addition, Up Sonder has successfully raised $350,000.
United States market is ready for growth
Our drone service marketplace is ready to serve US businesses in their needs for lower costs, shorter project timelines, and increased safety standards. Up Sonder spent 2017 & 2018 building its network of certified commercial drone pilots who are ready to service the needs of businesses in 2019.
The popularity of drones is spreading across the world at speeds faster than businesses can keep up with. Organization is needed and the Up Sonder standard of simple, easy, and transparent access to drone services is needed in other parts of the world. Canada and Europe are the next logical destinations.
Marketplace 2.0 - Autonomous Drone Network
Up Sonder is embracing autonomous drones by taking concrete steps for them to work side-by-side with Up Sonder drone pilots to cover increased use cases in the future. Up Sonder is preparing by building proprietary advanced technology for ultra-high precision autonomous drone flight and landing, creating drone fleet management software, and designing a network of rapid wireless charging locations to extend the range of autonomous drones.
If we reach our stretch goal of $1 million with this campaign, we will hire extra full-time salespeople and accelerate our growth in 2019.
"I wanted to personally thank you for taking a closer look at Up Sonder and I invite you to invest in the company that is shaping the drone industry. Derek Waleko: 00:26 My names Derek Waleko, CEO and Co-founder, Up Sonder. I decided to start Up Sonder after a visit with my mom in Texas. She has a chronic illness and lives in a very remote part of Texas. And she wasn't able to get her medication one night from the pharmacy because of the distance from where we live. I knew at that point that a drone could have made that delivery. All I want to do is help and it's really tough to see someone that you love suffer like that. So I knew there had to be a better way. I decided to turn a hobby into a career.
Derek Waleko: 00:56 We've been building Up Sonder with the goal in mind to be able to deploy a drone anywhere, anytime, for any reason.
Tim Draper: 01:08 Welcome to meet the Drapers. Give us your pitch.
Derek Waleko: 01:11 Thank you for having me. My name's Derek Waleko and I'm CEO of Up Sonder. Up Sonder is a drone services company. We're making it extremely easy and simple to be able to book drone services online. We have a true online marketplace where you can go and order your drone pilot on demand, as needed. Every mission has insurance. Every pilot is commercially licensed. And every drone is registered with the FAA.
Derek Waleko: 01:35 We put these standards in place to be able to take advantage of the drone industry as it exists today, under current rules and regulations. But the industry is evolving and we're staying ahead of it by developing software to control, manage, and track autonomous drones. In addition to our pilot network, we're also going to be deploying a fleet of autonomous drones to keep pace with the growing demand for drone services worldwide.
Bill Draper: 01:55 How do you define autonomous? Because every drone is autonomous. It's controlled from down below.
Derek Waleko: 02:02 So autonomous is completely without human interaction. So push a button, a drone shows up to the site location and flies. This is our vision for the future. We're building marketplace 2.0. If you look at the Amazon speaker, the Nest thermostat, the Ring doorbell. If those are the eyes and ears of a smart home, then the autonomous drone and autonomous cars are the arms and legs. We are building this future because we see tremendous value in being able to connect all the world's drones to be able to stay true to our mission statement. Deploy a drone anywhere, any time, for any reason.
Tim Draper: 02:33 So are you thinking that drones are going to be traveling around all the time, just kind of making sure everything's okay in your house? Or, what is your vision or are you gonna-
Derek Waleko: 02:42 We believe that every smart home in the future is going to have a drone docked on it's rooftop. We think that's going to become standard.
Tim Draper: 02:48 And for what purpose? Why do I have a drone on my house?
Derek Waleko: 02:52 So Amazon-
Anu Jain: 02:53 Medical needs. You know that's huge.
Derek Waleko: 02:56 So Amazon is going to be doing drone deliveries. Now, when the individual consumer has automated drones on their rooftop, it's going to be not a company sending you packages. It's going to be you sending your drone to go pick up your prescriptions. Your groceries, things of that nature. That future is what we're working towards and what we're building.
Anu Jain: 03:13 So basically like every single home, and you're kind of seeing that they will own at least one drone.
Derek Waleko: 03:18 Correct. A helper drone. This is the future we believe is going to exist, and so we want to interconnect that and be able to manage and track and operate all those drones. Within our network.
Tim Draper: 03:28 But to start with, they're not autonomous. They're being operated by professional operators.
Derek Waleko: 03:34 So, right now our mission is to deploy a drone anywhere, any time, for any reason. Today, we do that with drone pilots. We take certified FAA registered drone pilots and we get the drones from Point A to Point B. And this is for inspections. This is for mapping. This is for thermal imaging. PWC forecasts that the industry's going to grow to 127 billion dollars for drone services by 2020.
Anu Jain: 03:56 So are you going to deal with the air traffic as well?
Derek Waleko: 03:59 We're not building radar to be able to track all drones. We're building software to be able to track the drones that are within our network. And in the future, people will be able to tie into our network, and then they'll be able to work with out drones. And we'll know where their drones are at as well.
Tim Draper: 04:14 How many drones are in your network so far?
Derek Waleko: 04:17 We have almost 2000 members across the United States right now. We can service all 50 states. We have about over 700 cities online, with drone pilots.
Tim Draper: 04:26 And what are your revenues?
Derek Waleko: 04:28 So we just exited beta this year. We've done over 50 missions. For the last 12 months, we've made 35,000 dollars.
Bill Draper: 04:34 And where is that going to be in three years?
Derek Waleko: 04:36 We project next year we'll be 1.2 million. And then the next three years, it'll be over 25 million.
Polly Draper: 04:42 It's mostly from remote places that you think that this will do the best?
Derek Waleko: 04:47 No it's for everyone. But when we started servicing the oil and gas industry, it was out of a need from them to us. They reached out because they couldn't get pilots in a remote area to monitor a pipeline. And they actually told us they went to our competitors and they weren't able to do it.
Derek Waleko: 04:59 We were able to do that. We have a special relationship with our drone pilots. I understand how they think. I understand their needs. I understand how to talk to them and how to reach out to them. And we have never turned down job because we couldn't source a pilot.
Tim Draper: 05:11 And what's your background?
Derek Waleko: 05:13 Investment banking. I'm a drone pilot actually, and a drone hobbyist. And there came a point where I decided to turn a hobby into a career.
Anu Jain: 05:21 How big is your team?
Derek Waleko: 05:22 My team is five. My aerospace engineers, Sung and Tom, they are experts in RTK GPS. We've successfully demonstrated landing a drone with RTK GPS with centimeter precision, on a moving object. So this is ideally for capabilities for pairing with moving vehicles.
Bill Draper: 05:38 If you failed, what would you think the reason was?
Derek Waleko: 05:42 I think it's education. You know, there is a huge need for drones. But the people who want them and need them don't know how to get to that. So I think it's an education thing. What we're deciding to focus on instead of spinning our wheels is the areas that we organically fell into, which is the oil and gas, and real estate. Now there's over five million homes that are sold in the US every year that need to be marketed with great pictures and video. That's a revolving door, and we think that's the easiest application for early adoption of the autonomous drone. Just send the drone to the location, shoot the house, come back, deliver the assets.
Anu Jain: 06:13 What about healthcare? Don't you think that's also another area that's going to take over most of the industry, in terms of need?
Derek Waleko: 06:22 Yes, and we have freestanding ERs in Texas, called Physicians Premier. We're in early conversations, but they've confirmed that they're willing to have our drones fly between the labs and actual hospital itself. So this is a program that we will be starting with them.
Tim Draper: 06:36 Do you have a theme song? Like "Use your drones on your home [inaudible 00:06:45]". Something like that?
Derek Waleko: 06:49 No theme song, but Sonder, in our name, actually is an anagram for the word drones.
Polly Draper: 06:55 Also Sonder rhymes with yonder.
Tim Draper: 06:57 Yeah, there is a song coming.
Anu Jain: 06:59 Yes.
Tim Draper: 07:01 Okay, great. Well thank you so much for coming and Meet the Drapers.
Derek Waleko: 07:05 Thank you very much, thank you.
Bill Draper: 07:06 Bye bye.
Derek Waleko: 07:10 That was awesome. It was really good. I felt we got to really push across what Up Sonder's doing. Tim got it. I really think he loved our idea. I think Bill also liked the idea. It was a huge honor to be in front of these master investors. There were parts of our pitch that we didn't get to talk about like the fact that we're building block chain into the network. The fact that we're going to be setting up an actual energy grid to be able to service these drones. The hindsight is I want to talk more about our company. So there are some things that we didn't hit, but we did hit the main points, which was enough for them to understand the idea and the vision. The fact that we're doing business today, and we're going to be doing a lot of business tomorrow.
Derek Waleko: 07:52 I took a home equity loan for 100,000 dollars out of my own home. So I'm in it to win it. I'm invested in my own company. They'll be investing along with me. If viewers want to invest with Up Sonder, and be a part of its future, then they can go to Republic to see our campaign.
Tim Draper: 08:11 So let's see what the judges thought of Up Sonder. Did the drones have good bones?
Anu Jain: 08:16 Well I am a total believer in what they're doing. I mean, he's very qualified. This is his passion. I think his vision is right, spot on. This is where we are going to be headed. I mean right now, he's focused in two areas, oil and the housing. But I really feel there is a whole healthcare. I mean, it's just going to be going one after another. So he's, I mean I'm totally for this.
Polly Draper: 08:38 I was confused by what he was talking about about the control aspect. How he controlled the drones. Who are the people?
Tim Draper: 08:46 His controls are, hey, let's not have these two crash into each other.
Polly Draper: 08:50 Yeah.
Tim Draper: 08:50 And let's keep these at different altitudes.
Bill Draper: 08:53 And the network. He called it a network.
Polly Draper: 08:54 Network yeah.
Tim Draper: 08:56 What did you think?
Bill Draper: 08:57 It's the best entrepreneur I've seen. Energy, intelligence, quick delivery on exactly what he was trying to do. And the concept, as you point out, is a very good one. A network in a growth market.
Tim Draper: 09:11 I liked his vision. It shows us a picture of the future, and we're all kind of going, "Okay, I get it."
Tim Draper: 09:18 Getting to his vision is going to be a real struggle. But once he's there, this is going to be an enormous business.
Anu Jain: 09:26 I'm very excited.
Tim Draper: 09:26 Okay, so let's go to the crystal ball. Maybe it'll tell us something else. Okay.
Tim Draper: 09:35 I'm getting amazing vibes.
Anu Jain: 09:35 Yes, yes, yes.
Polly Draper: 09:39 Yes, it's saying yes.
Tim Draper: 09:42 Okay, I got it. Okay, thumbs up, thumbs down, thumbs all around. Where are we going? Four thumbs up.
Polly Draper: 09:49 Four thumbs up.
Tim Draper: 09:49 Oh my Lordy Lordy.
Polly Draper: 09:49 He was amazing.
Tim Draper: 09:49 That is something.
Anu Jain: 09:54 He was a winner.
Tim Draper: 09:56 Fantastic.
Anu Jain: 09:57 I'm very excited.
